In observance of the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, PEC developed and implemented the US Department of Energy’s 2-week long Earth Day celebration in April 2010, culminating in an outdoor celebration on the Headquarters Forrestal Plaza that was open to the public. DOE Earth Day on the Plaza included 75 “green” vendors, live music, hands-on demonstrations of green technologies, refreshments, a “Children’s Village” (to coordinate with concurrent National Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day), and a formal program of guest speakers, including the Secretary of Energy, a Federal Environmental Executive, and an educational entertainment written by PEC. Earth Day on the Plaza was attended by approximately 1,500 employees, visitors, and guests. PEC coordinated all logistics for the event, which included coordination with DOE security, public affairs, and facilities management; Washington, D.C. Department of Public Works; and stage design and management. Additionally, DOE partnered with the Earth Day Network, the non-profit organizational coordinator for Earth Days worldwide, as an exhibitor for Earth Day on the National Mall. PEC assisted in coordinating several DOE program level offices for DOE’s presence on the Mall, and the DOE Pavilion was visited by thousands of visitors over a 4-day period. PEC also developed, produced and directed an Earth Day video featuring children of DOE’s onsite childcare center. While PEC also supported DOE with its 2009 and 2011 activities, DOE Earth Day 40 was the largest such observance in DOE history.
